How to Calculate GPA and CGPA in Pakistan (HEC 4.0 Scale)

Most universities in Pakistan follow the Higher Education Commission (HEC) 4.0 grading scale. Under this system each letter grade maps to a grade point, usually with A grades near 4.0 and failing grades at 0.0. Your GPA is a weighted average of these grade points, where the weight is the number of credit hours for each course.

The key idea is that a three credit-hour course affects your GPA more than a one credit-hour course. That is why a high grade in a heavy course helps more, and a low grade in a heavy course hurts more. Always confirm the exact grade point table your own university uses, because some institutions adjust the boundaries slightly.

GPA usually refers to a single semester, while CGPA (cumulative GPA) combines all your semesters into one running average. Both use the same weighted-average method, just over a different set of courses.

To find your GPA for one semester, follow these steps:

First, list every course with its credit hours and the grade point you earned. Convert each letter grade to its grade point using your university's table (for example A equals 4.0, B equals 3.0, and so on).

Second, multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours. This gives you the quality points for that course.

Your CGPA extends the same method across every semester you have completed. Add the quality points from all semesters together, add all the credit hours together, and divide. You do not simply average your semester GPAs, because semesters can have different total credit hours.
